Squad Foster Gus

Gus was surrendered by his previous owner and joined the Squad as a foster on 2/13/22. When we first met Gus, he was very malnourished and weak. He had been living in an abandoned auto shop and was lucky if he was fed more than once every 3 days. His face and body were covered in wounds. Gus’s ears were freshly mutilated from a “DIY” at home crop job.

During Gus’s first week with us, he abruptly collapsed multiple times. The vet informed us that the collapsing episodes were seizures, secondary to living in a meth house. Fortunately, he has not experienced a seizure since the first week and does not require any neurological medication or treatment at this time.

Gus’s front paws knuckle when he walks. What is knuckling? Knuckling occurs when the top of the dog’s paw drags along the ground as they are walking. This is a chronic symptom of unspecific neurological issues from meth exposure. He is awfully clumsy, which fits perfectly with his giant, goofy personality!

Gus was ADOPTED!!

Squad Foster Gus departed from Greenville, SC, to his forever home with his new family in Canada on 5/24/22. He has a new four-legged brother and has loved his family’s outdoorsy lifestyle!

Medical Issues: Knuckling

Gus’s front paws knuckle when he walks....

What is knuckling? Knuckling occurs when the top of the dog’s paw drags along the ground as they are walking. This is a chronic neurological issue in which neurons don't function and the dog is unable to send the proper signals to their extremities. Gus knuckles his front paws when he is walking and, at times, when he is standing..

Proprioception, also known as kinesthesia, is the body's ability to sense its body position and movement. It is sometimes known as the dog's ‘sixth sense’. However, when this sense does not work properly, it may mean there is proprioceptive deficit (CP deficit). This means the dog is no longer able to innately recognize when their paws are being utilized correctly. This may mean the dog is knuckling without even being aware of it.
