Bennie Update April 2024
This morning, Squad Foster Bennie had a visit with Dr. Jones at Five Forks Animal Hospital, where he was all smiles getting his health check-up. Bennie received his updated Rabies vaccine, good for 3 years, alongside his DA2PPL vaccine (also good for 3 years), ensuring he stays healthy and ready for adventures. Not to forget, Bennie is also covered with a ProHeart12 injection from last summer for heartworm prevention and just got a 3-month dose of Bravecto to keep those pesky parasites at bay.
Bennie is more than just a healthy pup; he's a bundle of energy and intelligence, looking for a family that matches his zest for life. He thrives on mental and physical challenges, making him the perfect companion for active individuals or families who know and love the ins and outs of working breeds.
Bennie is…
-Neutered & UTD on Vaccinations: Bennie is in tip-top shape, neutered, and up to date on all his vaccinations. He's ready to leap into his new life with his furever family.
-Looking for an Experienced Family: Bennie's ideal home is one familiar with the unique needs of working breeds. His future family should be dedicated to keeping him engaged and active, both mentally and physically.
-Home Requirements: Bennie would do best in a home without small animals, including cats, and with children over the age of 12. His strong working drives mean he needs a family that understands and appreciates his nature.
Bennie's adoption fee is just $100, a small price for a lifetime of love and adventure. This fee helps us continue our mission at Dog Squad but doesn't come close to covering all the medical care we've provided for our furry friends.
If you're looking for an energetic and loyal companion to share in your adventures, Bennie might just be your perfect match. Fill out an adoption application on our website today and take the first step towards bringing Bennie home. Your adventure awaits!
A dog's appearance can be deceptive, and Squad Foster Bennie no exception. Bennie has been a Dog Squad foster for 11 months, and he’s certainly taught us the importance of looking beyond just the appearance in dogs. We’ve learned a lot about his unique personality and instinctive behaviors over the past year, yet finding the perfect home for Bennie has been a puzzle. To better understand him and to help him find the perfect forever home, we turned to DNA testing through Wisdom Panel.
While dogs may physically resemble a particular breed, their true genetic makeup can be quite different and significantly influence their behavior and training needs.
Did you know that less than 1% of a dog's genome determines its physical appearance (0.25%)? This means the vast majority of a dog's genetic makeup (99.75%) influences other aspects like behavior, personality, temperament, health, metabolism, and more. This is crucial for understanding dogs like Bennie, whose behavior might be influenced by breeds not immediately apparent in his appearance.
Bennie's DNA test revealed a mix of 14 breeds, with notable influences from the Guard and Herding groups, such as the German Shepherd, Border Collie, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Shepherd, and Catahoula Leopard Dog. Each of these breeds brings unique instincts and behaviors that shape Bennie’s personality and needs:
•German Shepherd: Known for their intelligence and vigilance, these dogs are natural working breeds. They bring an instinct for guarding and a propensity for being alert, traits that define Bennie's protective nature.
•Border Collie: Extremely energetic, intelligent, and determined. Bennie's herding instinct, a signature of this breed, manifests in his protective and watchful behavior.
•American Staffordshire Terrier: Loyal and hardworking, AmStaffs excel as guard dogs. They are protective of their families but can be wary of strangers and unfamiliar animals.
•American Pit Bull Terrier: Characterized by their strength and agility, APBTs are loyal and affectionate, especially towards children. Their courageous nature makes them persistent in their actions.
•Catahoula Leopard Dog: Known for their territorial and protective instincts, they contribute to Bennie's need for clear leadership and a structured environment. Their high energy and work ethic are key aspects of Bennie's personality.
•Australian Shepherd: Intelligent and driven, they imbue Bennie with strong herding and guarding instincts, alongside a need for mental and physical engagement.
•Chow Chow: Originally bred for guarding, Chow Chows retain a strong protective instinct.
Bennie is not a couch potato. He thrives on mental and physical stimulation and is best suited for an experienced owner familiar with working breeds. Activities like agility, dock diving, nose work, and search & rescue would suit him well. A farm setting where he can utilize his herding instincts would also be ideal.
Bennie’s journey illustrates the importance of looking beyond appearances to understand a dog’s true nature. He’s not just a dog with adorable ginormous ears and a long nose; he’s a complex, intelligent, and loving creature waiting for a family that truly understands him.

Today, Squad Foster Bennie received his 3rd and final Melarsomine injection, a treatment that targets and eliminates adult heartworms. However, this treatment takes a toll on his body, much like chemotherapy does for humans.
For the next 6-8 weeks, Bennie will require strict kennel rest. It's crucial to restrict exercise during the melarsomine treatment as the dead heartworms linger in the bloodstream, lodging in blood vessel walls. Excessive physical activity can push these fragments into narrowing vessels, posing the risk of blockages, embolisms, or even death.
Here's an interesting fact: Unlike other parasites that can be eliminated through the digestive system, heartworms have nowhere to go once they die. They float around in the bloodstream, waiting for the body's immune system to dissolve and absorb them. That's why we must be cautious during exercise, as it can force these fragments into vessels, causing potential blockages and damage.
Additionally, heartworm treatment is both time-consuming and costly, averaging 15 times more expensive than a year's supply of heartworm preventative medication. We're incredibly grateful to Five Forks Animal Hospital for their ongoing support in providing second chances to Dog Squad's foster dogs.
Bennie is a true goofball with boundless energy, making the upcoming 8 weeks of kennel rest a challenge. His ideal human companion would lead an active lifestyle. With Bennie's intelligence, eagerness to learn, and athletic drive, he would thrive in agility training. If Dog Squad had superlatives, Bennie would undoubtedly win "Life Of The Party"!
Once Bennie completes his heartworm treatment and heals, he'll be ready to find his forever home. Are you the compassionate and active person Bennie has been waiting for? Adopt Bennie today and give him the amazing life he deserves!

When Bennie first joined Dog Squad Rescue in December 2022, we noticed a couple of small hard bumps beneath his skin. At the time, our naïve eyes assumed they were just simple cysts, especially since other vets had no concerns about them before. However, during his visit to Dr. Schmitz at Five Forks Animal Hospital on 4/28/23, we discovered that these bumps are actually BB pellets lodged just beneath his skin.
Despite this tough start in life, Bennie remains a sweet and resilient boy. He will soon undergo X-rays to check for any additional BB pellets once he completes his heartworm treatment. From there, we'll discuss the best plan for their removal to ensure Bennie can live comfortably and pain-free.
Bennie has shown incredible strength and a gentle spirit throughout his journey. He's looking for a forever home that will provide him with the love, care, and security he deserves. Could you be the family Bennie has been waiting for?
Adopt Bennie and give this brave survivor the happy ending he's been longing for.

This morning, Squad Foster Bennie visited the vet due to runny eyes. While we didn’t expect any surprises, the visit took an unexpected turn.
The good news: Bennie’s runny eyes are allergy-related and nothing more serious.
The bad news: Bennie tested positive for Heartworm disease.
Yes, you read that correctly. We were just as shocked since Bennie tested negative for Heartworm disease at the beginning of January and has been on monthly Heartworm prevention medication since then. This situation highlights the importance of having your dog tested for Heartworm disease annually, at the very minimum.
You might be wondering how this happened. Here are a few possible explanations:
- The infection had been present for less than 5 months when he was tested in December (it takes 6-7 months after the mosquito bite to show up on a heartworm test).
- The heartworms were still young and sexually immature in December.
- There was infection with a single sex (all male or all female worms) in December.
Bennie started 30 days of Doxycycline on 4/17/23 and will receive his first Melarsomine injection on 6/16/23.
Despite this setback, Bennie remains a sweet, loving pup ready to find his forever home once he completes his treatment. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work to get Bennie healthy and happy again!
Bennie had his first vet exam today, and we're thrilled to report he passed with flying colors! He received a handful of vaccines, including Rabies, DA2P, Parvo, and Leptospirosis, and tested negative for heartworms disease.
Bennie is an awesome, young pup weighing in at 47 lbs. We estimate he’s between 3-4 years old. Bennie is not only SMART but also eager to learn. This fireball of energy would be the perfect companion for an active human! He is kennel trained, knows basic commands, and loves both kids and adults.
Ready to add some excitement and love to your life? Bennie is ready for his forever home!
Bennie’s story with us started at our Holiday Bash event on December 17, 2022. This big-eared, boxy boy showed up with no human in sight. Wearing a collar but no tags, it was clear Bennie had once been someone's beloved pet. He was neutered and knew basic commands like "sit" and "shake."
Our friends at Dog-Gone Nails went door-to-door in the nearby neighborhood, hoping to find Bennie's owner or someone who recognized him. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful. We couldn't leave Bennie wandering the streets of downtown Greenville, so we brought him home for the night with plans to scan him for a microchip.
To our relief, the scanner picked up a microchip! We called the microchip company right away. Due to a privacy hold, they couldn't give us the owners' contact information but confirmed that his name is Bennie and that he was adopted a year ago from Greenville County Animal Care. They redirected us to Greenville County Animal Care, where he had been neutered and microchipped. They would be able to contact the owners from there.
By law, a stray dog with a microchip must be held for eight days while attempts to contact the owner are made. Greenville County Animal Care called the owners and left a voicemail. They also reached out via email.
We posted Bennie's story on many Facebook pages and groups to aid in our search for his owners, including:
- Upstate Foster Link (SC)
- Lost & Found Pets of Upstate SC
- PETS LOST & FOUND (Spartanburg/Greenville SC & Polk Co NC)
- For Those Who Have Lost or Found A Fur Baby in SC and Surrounding Areas
- South Carolina- Lost Dogs, Cats, & Pets- PawBoost Community
- Lost/Found Pets: Simpsonville/Ft Inn/Mauldin/Pelzer/Moonville SE GNVL Cnty
- Lost Pets of Upstate South Carolina
We also posted him on PawBoost with his microchip ID.
Despite our best efforts, eight days passed with no response from Bennie's owner. Hoping for a reunion, we held off on posting Bennie as a Squad Foster. After waiting 19 days with no word, we officially welcomed Bennie as a Squad Foster.
Bennie is now looking for a new forever home. He's a sweet and smart boy, ready to bring joy to a loving family. Could that be you?
